The Lobb Family History

Frank Lobb in The Olive, circa 1900

My great grandfather, Frank Lobb in The Olive, circa 1900

This is my great grandfather, Frank Lobb, fishing out of Port Isac before the breakwater was built. The fishing line continued when his son Frank, my grandfather, became a yacht skipper mate on a cruising yacht based out of Fowey, and spent many years sailing the Med, Biscay and France.

My father, Vernon carried on in the family business as skipper mate on Fry’s private yacht “Eliswane” which was based out of Dartmouth. He spent much of his time racing and cruising Biscay and Spain until he decided to come ashore in Dartmouth after meeting my mum, Sylvia.

Dad set up his fish round business and Paul my older brother went out to sea, fishing and crabbing. I joined my dad in the family business straight from school and learned my trade, starting on my own in the mid 70’s and setting up my stall in Dartmouth Market. Things became very busy! I arranged with Dartmouth council to temporarily store the stall in a local empty store but we soon needed our own permanent store and bought The Old Telephone Exchange in Stoke Fleming. We expanded by going to the farmers markets as well.

I passed my yacht master in 2008, with a commercial endorsement, and taught with the Devon sailing charters for a few years on a part time basis as relief skipper.

Our new permanent space in Dartmouth market will be finished very soon, so all that is local and fresh can be bought throughout the week. We’ll also be running workshops and may just have a few tasty cooked treats available!
